There are many paths in Hitchin, some of which follow the medieval field paths, while others are of more recent origin. The aim of the OffRoad series is to introduce cachers to this network, and to bring them to different parts of the town, some familiar, others less so. Storehouse Lane is a pedestrian path for much of its length, and for a long time marked the edge of the town, the wall of the Saxon burgh following roughly this course. The walls on the town side of the lane are Victorian or older, as are many of the buildings, while on the opposite side there were market gardens and nurseries. The building near the GZ is the rear of the Lancasterian Teaching Hall of the British Schools Museum, and careful examination will reveal a bricked up gateway opposite which used to lead to the boys playground. When the estate was built a deep well, probably Victorian, was found under the tarmac of the playground. The Museum is well worth a visit as it has unique buildings and educational material on display.
Although the GZ is close to the part of the Lane with vehicular access, it is not recommended that it is approached by car as it narrow and rough; rather come on foot from either end of the lane. The cache is somewhat overlooked by the new houses so care is needed. As the surface is muddy in winter, the path is not used a lot, but there are a number of side access paths, so muggles may appear suddenly and without warning. Under better conditions, the cache should be accessable for wheelchair users, although reaching the cache might be a challenge. The cache contains a log, pencil and some goodies. Please make sure the cache is well hidden when you leave to prevent this replacement being muggled.
