There are many paths in Hitchin, some of which follow the medieval field paths, while others are of more recent origin. The aim of the OffRoad series is to introduce cachers to this network, and to bring them to different parts of the town, some familiar, others less so. This path is variously called Highbury Path or sometimes Avenue Path. I prefer the former as it runs behind the houses on Highbury. The route of the path is obviously old, since it is part of the complex that runs over Windmill Hill and thence either to Wymondley Road or via other paths towards Walsworth (which was a separate settlement). The path decends quite steeply, and is VERY slippery in conditions of snow and ice; however at other times it is fine and well surfaced. It is very busy as it is a direct route to the station and is also heavily used by pupils from Hitchin Girls School. It is therefore best to visit mid morning or in the evening. The cache is a black non-magnetic cigar tube. Please replace as found. It is not accessible to wheelchair users.
