The hike to this cache takes you up the trail that climbs Cave Hill, which is home to multiple caves including Grand Caverns, Fountain Cave, and Madison's Cave. The cache is a bit off the trail after it passes the entrance to Fountain Cave (usually locked). We originally attempted to place a cache here about a year ago, but it was 60 feet too close (as the crow flies - the elevation difference was significant) to the old Cave Hill cache that was at the bottom of the hill. When viewing the new caches in this park, we noticed that the Cave Hill cache is now archived, so we're trying this one again!
The trailhead is marked by a sign depicting a hiker between the Gift Shop/Ticket Office and the paved trail up the hill to the Grand Caverns entrance. Tickets apply only for entering Grand Caverns - you can stroll the rest of the park for free. Please take care as the trail is narrow with a steep dropoff on one side and poison ivy encroaching all around.
As of 2025, the area has changed yet again, requiring a slight name change - now you need to go up the hill and over just one tree - I guess technically you could still go under the tree but I wouldn't advise it for anyone but the littlest ones! Cache is Snapware, probably more a regular than a small now but we’ll leave it as is since changing characteristics of a cache can be problematic for those working on challenge caches. It is NOT in the big hole. Please rehide carefully and concealed - don't drop it in the hole!
*****Congrats to Mossycreek and Terramina for the FTF!! ******
