This cache is placed in a guardrail along US-250 at the intersection with a small side road. At the cache area there is a gravel/grass area where you may pull off of the roadway. From this pull out you will usually be able to see the Soles Tunnel. Please do not approach the tunnel, stay close to the parking area, do not cross any fences or gates. During the summer the amount of vegetation is substantial and can block the view.
We know little about the tunnel except for the fact it was part of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and on the line connecting Fairmont to Moundsville. To get a little closer to the history and the route we suggest checking out the East Wetzel Trail in the town of Hundred. If the trail continued on toward Moundsville, it would travel through the Soles Tunnel.
If you know of any of the history and background, please let us know! But, for now, it's just a neat thing to see on the winding road between Hundred and Cameron.
