Geocache Description:

The Central Oregon Coast is home to Yachats, Gem of the Oregon Coast with great walking, hiking, biking, scenic, and historical sites. Filling in a passport with 20 passwords from 26 possible caches will earn you the Yachats Geocoin , a beautiful coin designed by ThunderingRocks.

This cache location overlooks the North edge of the Village and the Adobe Inn. The large flat landscaped area between the hotel proper and Highway 101 was once a parade ground for military maneuvers.

In 1855 the U.S. Government established the Coast Range Reservation and the Alsea Sub-Agency in Yachats was manned by the U.S. Calvary who had marched the coastal Coos and Lower Umpqua tribes over Cape Perpetua to Yachats. The plight of the native coastal tribes has been described in many of the caches already placed in and around Yachats.

The large open area was used for marching by the Calvary and the futile attempts for farming to produce food for the tribes. The soil was not satisfactory and too close to the ocean for good harvests. The Indians developed a trail along the Yachats River to a meadow to raise corn, potatoes, and oats.

During World War II the parade grounds were utilized by the military personnel who where stationed in Yachats. They were housed in a local skating rink and the Ladies Club was rented for their entertainment and recreation in addition to the drills that were done on the "parade grounds."

If you are trying to complete the Scenic Yachats tour to earn the Yachats Geocoin make sure you record the password on this inside cover of the cache. The Passport can be viewed and printed at goyachats.com/Geocaching. See GC4FTEN for details.

You are looking for 50 cal. ammo can. Part of the terrain rating covers getting up on Horizon Hill where this cache is located. The road up to the top is a city street but is one lane, very steep, and VERY limited turnouts. Be very careful when you travel up to the top.
