The location of this cache on the Yachats River is the tidal inundation zone, at this point it is possible to get a mixture of fresh and salt water at high tide.
The river begins at the Klickatat Mountain and in it's travels is joined by Grass Creek, School Fork, Keller Creek, Stump Creek, and finally by Neiglick Creek. The river is known for Cutthroat Trout, which as a native species may be catch and release depending upon the population numbers.
Just past this stop there is an opening into a large meadow that might have been where the Native Americans held at the sub-Agency tried farming. They had no success closer to the ocean and were starving since they were hunters and gatherers and not farmers. About twelve years after the sub-Agency was established, they were permitted to open a trail along the river to hunt and try planting corn, oats, wheat, and potatoes. Once they had established the agricultural communities the U.S. Government opened it up to white settlers for homesteading and once again they were forced to move in 1875.
