The picture of the sign above tells the whole history of this preserve. The elk do not gather here in large groups as they do in the preserve east of Reedsport, but they do come.
A few years ago, an employee at the coffee stand in Waldport would always complain about the elk herd traveling across the road at about 4:30 in the morning as she was going to work! She drove a compact and the size of the elk were impressive.
