Geocache Description:

This is a quick road side cache with a request. I have tried looking for more information on this conservatory and cant find anything else than "sea facing conservatory". I am hoping some cachers will assist by trying to research this a bit more and posting it here. Credit will be given!

Some information supplied by cache_strapped_two: Nelson Mandela Bay (incorporating Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Despatch, Colchester, Blue Horizon Bay and Seaview), with a population of some 1.1 million people and an area of some 1 952 km2, is the largest urban area in the Eastern Cape. The Metro occurs at the eastern-most end of the Cape Floristic Region (a biodiversity region of global significance), and at the point of interface of five of South Africa’s nine biomes, namely: Fynbos, Subtropical Thicket, Nama Karoo, Forest and Grassland. The climate is mild and temperate, and, being at the transition of summer and winter rainfall regions, the rainfall in the area is unpredictable all year round. The combination of geology, soils, climate and topography represented in the Metro has given rise to a complex mosaic of vegetation types dominated by fynbos (pictured above) and subtropical thicket components exhibiting high levels of floristic diversity and endemism (i.e. species that have a very restricted distribution). The Metro is situated largely on a gently sloping coastal plain, hemmed on its southern, coastal boundary by high, ancient dunes and on its northern and western boundaries by high and rugged mountainous terrain (e.g. the ridges of the Lady Slipper Mountain). Various drainage systems, such as the Maitlands, Baakens and Van Staden’s Rivers, have carved deep and wide valleys into the more easily erodible bedrock, resulting in a number of natural corridors crossing the Metro. The vegetation of the Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve area, through which the "hunt racks" run, is a complex mixture of vegetation types including Indian Ocean Forest and a dune fynbos—thicket –mosaics. The entire southern coastal belt of the Nelson Mandela Metropole, including the Sardinia Bay area, is of the highest importance for biodiversity conservation and for aesthetic reasons. The Chelsea Forest-Thicket mosaic is considered to be critically endangered and the dune fynbos-thicket mosaics are classed as vulnerable in the Nelson Mandela Bay Conservation Plan. These areas are important not only because of the vegetation they include, but also because of the many animal species to which they are home – the blue duiker, bushbuck, chameleons and many other species of birds and insects that depend on the presence of large enough areas of intact natural vegetation for their existence. Much of the Sardinia Bay area is under private ownership, and a relatively large amount is under informal conservation protection (e.g. local conservancies). However, remaining natural habitats are being increasingly fragmented and threatened by infestation by invasive alien species (e.g. rooikranz), urban development, sand-mining and other forms of habitat conversion. Greater conservation protection is needed to ensure that a protected area system for this southern coastal belt area is expanded strategically and managed in a way that will ensure long-term conservation of the area’s biodiversity, and the ecological processes that support it.
