CHIESA DI S. AGOSTINO, CARAVATE
La chiesa di sant'Agostino, di modeste dimensioni, è stata costruita in stile romanico nei secoli XI-XII. Questa antica e pregevole chiesa viene citata nei documenti all'inizio del XII secolo, e rappresenta con il suo ciclo di affreschi uno splendido esempio dell'arte pittorica lombarda dei primi secoli dopo il Mille. E’ collocata proprio nel centro del paese, ed è stata oggetto di studi e restauri recenti quanto importanti che l'hanno riportata all'antico splendore medioevale.
L'intervento ha interessato la struttura muraria della chiesetta e dell'area circostante. Sono state pulite le superfici esterne e rimossi meccanicamente i tamponamenti più recenti. All'interno sono conservati affreschi trecenteschi (una crocifissione gotica e una successiva oltre a una adorazione dei Re Magi) e decorazioni settecentesche. All’esterno sono visibili i resti di sette tombe.
In questo paese sono presenti le tracce di un remoto passato che parla di genti Liguri, della civiltà di Golasecca, di insediamenti etruschi, romani e celti. Le tracce del Medioevo sono molto più vive e conservate nel tessuto stesso di Caravate, fra cui la chiesa agostiniana.
CHURCH OF ST AUGUSTINE, CARAVATE
The church of St. Augustine, of modest size, was built in the Romanesque style in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. This ancient and valuable church is mentioned in documents in the early twelfth century, and represents with his fresco cycle a splendid example of the pictorial art of the early centuries after Mille. It is situated right in the center of the village and it has been the subject of studies and recent restoration as important that they have restored to its former medieval splendor.
The intervention involved the wall structure of the church and surrounding area. The exterior surfaces have been clean and removed mechanically plug newer. Inside are preserved fourteenth-century frescoes (a Gothic crucifixion and subsequent addition and an adoration of the Magi), and eighteenth-century decorations. Outside are the remains of seven graves.
In this village there are traces of a distant past that speaks of the Ligurian people, the civilization of Golant, of Etruscan, Roman and Celtic. The traces of the Middle Ages are much more alive and preserved in the very fabric of Caravate, including the Augustinian church.
