Geocache Description:

The hunt for this cache will take you to the summit of Sugarloaf Hill at 272 meters, via a stunning coastal walk and a steady inland climb to the top of this beautiful and historic landmark. Surely one of the highlights of St. Helena. The trail follows what was once a well made military trail which has suffered some erosion in the last 200 years but is still easy to follow and by St. Helena standards relatively safe.

This walk from T1 to the cache is about 3.76 kms (straight line distance 1.88kms) so the round trip will be about 7.52kms. Allow at least 2 hours up and 1.5 down. If walking from Jamestown add another hour (4.5 in total) Remember to take lots of water and a snack.

The trail to this cache is best started by parking in the public car park at the end of Ruperts Valley at point (PK). which is where the trail head is (T1). However for a longer walk directly from Jamestown, or for those without transport you can start at an alternative trail head (T2) in Mundens road or sisters walk Jamestown. (This is also a trail head for cache GC446EM: Topguns). PLEASE NOTE! for a few days a month this cache will not be accessible as a cargo ship docks in Ruperts Bay once every 22 days for 2 days and the area at the start is closed to the public. Just ask anyone if the Basil Reid ship NP Glory IV is in port? Usually this is not at the same time as the RMS.

Start the trail (T1) alongside the fence next to the gate at the end of the car park near the toilets and the fuel farm, and head along the coastal path keeping the sea on your left. This path meanders along until you round a head land and get your first view of Sugarloaf, its really not as bad as you think as the path is long but gentle. Drop down on the path to cross the fortifications at the end of Banks valley known as Banks lines and follow the path which zig zags up to the Half moon battery (R1). This was originally known as King William Fort.(The original guns now lay in the water below, and can be seen if you scuba dive the area). Just past the half moon battery the path doubles back on its self next to the cliff and a large scar of red rock, this is the start of the inland route and climb to the summit. (On the way back if you go straight here you can explore the whole of the banks battery which includes several gun emplacements and various tunnels and powder stores well worth a visit) Work your way up this track avoiding the prickly pear (locally called Tungi and is distilled into a local drink). at the saddle a large cairn helps you follow the route across an area of erosion. Your goal is now in site and no longer looks so intimidating. At the top of Sugarloaf is one of the local post box walk boxes. There use to be an observation post and signal station on this hill to warn of approaching ships. The cache which is a usual size sandwich container is located near the summit. The top of Sugarloaf can also be accessed from a path leading from Flagstaff Hill where there is also a cache GC452IX.
