On Bayou Tchoupitoulas which courses through the subburbs of the city empting into Lake Pontchartrain are found relics of the old Indian town of Tchoutchouma, or “City of the Sun”, which antedated by countless centuries “The Cresent City”.
Here are many primeval shell mounds and Indian burial grounds where Bayou Tchoupitoulas that flowed from the causeway lakefront area and connected with Bayou St. John. This was later called Bayou Metairie.
