Metairie bayou was originally referred to as Chemin de Tchoupitoulas or “fish hole”. The entire Metairie area was originally called Tchoupitoulas.
In 1765 Metairie Road was built. The name changed to Bayou Metairie. It flowed from the causeway lakefront area and went along Metairie Road and ended up into Bayou St. John. Bayou Gentilly also emptied into Bayou St. John.
