Witham expanded greatly in the late 60s & 70s to accomodate families from London as a result of the 'New Town' over-spill policy. In the 80s accelerating in the 90s & 2000s a large number of houses were built to the south-southwest of the town infilling the farmland that used to exist between the town and the A12 bypass. The most recent of which is the Maltings Lane development.
