THE MAYOR’S CACHE

This cache has been placed for the Mayor of Quispamsis, who tirelessly takes me out caching, attends breakfasts, ice cream socials and is very good at finding the caches that I just can’t seem to locate - even though he says he is not a cacher!  So here’s to you Mr. Mayor and this wonderful project that the Town has completed.

Welcome to a restored Matthews Cove and the newest walking trail in Quispamsis.  It is a continuation of the trails in and around the qplex grounds.  Beginning in 1976 this area formed a wastewater treatment lagoon and was subsequently decommissioned in 2003.  The restoration began in 2008 and in 2009 a generous contribution from Canaport LNG enabled the Town of Quispamsis to restore this area to a nutrient rich wetland that provides a productive environment for a wide range of plants and animals to thrive.  Many species of animals and birds can feed, drink water and find shelter here.  Fish can use the calm waters of the wetland pond as a nursery or as a rest area before continuing up Saunders Brook.  This wetland pond is a natural sediment filter that helps to purify the water before it moves downstream; and it is a natural water retention pond that helps to control the water flow into the Kennebecasis River during heavy rainstorms and the spring snow melt.

There are benches and picnic tables on site, so plan to stay awhile and enjoy the view and the wildlife…….
