Geocache Description:

BYOP - bison tube attached to a guardian.
This cache has a 'rite in rain' log if you find it damp just dry it with a cloth.
Please remember that bison tubes need only be tightened until they are snug
if they are tightened right up hard it will compromise the o-ring and cause them to leak. Thanks

The Nighthawk Cache!

Went out with Vicmorda one hot summer day in August and walked along this unused road that is beginning to revert back to its natural setting. As I was complaining about the dumping that is happening in our great wilderness, a bird flew up ahead of us.
“Be careful” says Vicmorda, “that was a nighthawk.” Nighthawks he told me do not make nests in trees but on the ground right where they are. I should watch where I stepped because I could easily step on the eggs. He went on to tell me that the eggs, usually just 2 would look very much like the rocks at our feet. So I stopped moving. I stood and looked around at the area and saw many little rocks and some fern like vegetation right between my feet. I bent over and picked up a very small feather, like a downy breast feather from a chick. Oh, I thought, they might be right close. I looked to my left, then to my right and there not 2 inches from my foot were two eggs. Once seen, they did not look like rocks, but they did blend in beautifully with the surroundings. We decided not to release the cache until these two little nighthawks had hatched but we watched them over the next few days and weeks.
Each time we went, the mother hawk was sitting on those eggs. As close as we got to her, she never again flew away. We took our I-Pad and took her picture and she just sat there. Never blinked, never moved. We never stayed long, as we didn't want her to get upset and abandon her eggs.
And then the day came when there was not just one bird but three. Again, we were allowed to get very close to them and they did not move and they did not blink an eye. They all sat very still.
Today we went again. There was only one bird in the area. Did the Mama bird take one with her to teach it how to survive and leave the other? Did a predator come and snatch two of them? We believe the one we saw today was one of the chicks. It is so small. But we realize that it is big enough now to survive on its own. So we will release the cache. It is a dragon fly with a bison tube that we left to guard our little find although it is further away from the nighthawk family. As you walk along this road, please remember that it is home to these nighthawks and although they might not be around when you are, they just might be coming back, so walk carefully.

The Nighthawks were located just past the end of the wooden debris, that is where you must turn right to reach the cache.
