Lego Crew’s fine series on the Campaign Trail

The Dark Horse is an old horse racing term for a race horse that is not known to gamblers and therefore is difficult to calculate the betting odds on where it will place in a race.
Politically, the term is applied to a little-known person who rises to the front of the pack in a political race. The list of Dark Horse US presidents include: James K. Polk, Franklin Pierce, Abraham Lincoln, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Warren G. Harding, and Jimmy Carter.
