Geocache Description:

The Bardsea Branch (BB): intended originally as a new main line to Barrow only two miles were ever constructed crossing the Ulverston canal on an opening bridge and terminating at Priory Station just short of the village of Bardsea. The line opened for traffic on 27th June 1883.

In fact the construction only reached nearby Conishead Priory, although the earthworks and right of way were fenced off for about half a mile beyond this point.

Lines were laid slightly further on than the Station but did not reach SteetGate to the South.

Beyond this an embankment and an additional stone bridge can still be seen and followed across the field towards Bardsea. Sadly no further construction activity took place beyond this location.

It is interesting to visit the bridge which still has significant iron firments in place.
