The Gregorian calendar is the modern calendar we are used to and is a worldwide standard. The Gregorian calendar's predecessor was the Julian Calendar. This calendar was based on the Roman calendar but included the addition of the (E)th and (F)th months, was 365 days long and added the concept of the leap year. Converting from the Roman calendar to the Julian calendar took some planning. Besides adding extra months, the calendar was also "realigned". The year 4(H) BC was made 4(C)5 days long. A "leap day" was added to the (A) month of the year.

It is believed that Caesar's inspiration for reforming the Roman calendar was due to time he spent in Egypt. The Egyptian calendar had months with great names like Hwt-hwr(B), Hnsw(D) and Rekh neds(G). They had adapted their calendar to the solar year prior to the Romans so already had a 365 day year. I'm just glad that all the crazy calendar changes happened so long ago because I get annoyed by daylight savings time.
