The cache is placed near the summit of Little Huckleberry Mt. A former fire lookout site overlooking the Big Lava Bed in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
The little used trail to the top of Little Huckleberry Mt. is open to hikers, bikers and equestrians. The trail climbs a forested ridge of second growth timber before eventually breaking out into a berry/wildflower field shortly before reaching the summit. The summit, at 4,781 feet, was leveled to accommodate a fire lookout that was destroyed in 1970. The trail gains about 1,800 feet in 2.5 miles, making for a good short day hike and there is a small spring about a half mile below the summit and several places to camp near the summit. The nearly treeless summit provides excellent views of the big lava bed and surrounding peaks and valleys. From the town of Willard drive north on forest service road #66 which is paved and then turns to gravel(ok for passenger cars) for about 10 miles to the well marked trailhead on the East side of the road. Trail #49, trailhead/parking @ 45 54.325 121 42.268. Or approach the trailhead from the North via trout lake or goose lake, a good map of the area is a must. The ice caves and some collapsed lava tubes nearby make for a good side trip, the ice caves are really cool on a hot day.
