The New Zealand Government has made a long-term commitment to invest in a social marketing campaign to slow the spread of didymo and other aquatic pests that may adversely affect fresh waterways.
The campaign, which began in 2005, focuses on getting waterways users to always Check, Clean, Dry equipment and clothing between waterways. The Check, Clean, Dry methodology, including detailed cleaning instructions, is based on scientific research. The campaign focuses on the people most likely to travel between fresh waterways - especially kayakers, canoeists, jet boaters, pleasure boaters, anglers and fly-fishers - but also trampers, hunters, swimmers and drivers of campervans and off-road vehicles.
