St Mary the Virgin is a pretty church with roots in Norman England. It is on a site that has probably been used for worship since Saxon times and the remains of an early wooden building are thought to lie immediately in front of the church entrance. The doorstep to the church is a menhir with Roman characters at one end. Other features include a Norman font, a ring of six bells cast in 1767, an unusual clock escapement, a listed headstone and some 17th century murals inside the church. There are views of Dartmoor from the churchyard. Unusually grand in scale for a small village, the church reflects the original importance of Bratton Clovelly as a crossing point for moving goods via packhorse or cart between Okehampton, Tavistock and Launceston.
