Geocache Description:


The City of Fews was founded in 1906 as part of an overall regeneration of the area and this cache is placed at the now abandoned City Centre. With your back to the road you can see the former Council buildings, the shopping centre, the doctors surgery and a car dealership. The first sod was turned in the city of Fews by the first Mayor of Fews Davy Epins and 17 people turned out to see work begin on the new site. Plans were ambitious for the new city and it was expected to attract people from all over the world with houses planned for as many as 322 people. Sadly many of these were never completed and inhabitants began to drift away and by the 70's only 68 people lived in the city and by the late 80's this number had dropped further to 19. In 1990 a huge amount of money was pumped into a regeneration of the entire area including the opening of a new Well Complex which is close to Cache 2 in this series. Despite President Reagan staying here during his visit in 1991 and Bon Jovi playing a sell out concert in the city's Sweep Arena, the new plans failed and the last people left the city in 2009 leaving it to grow wild.
New plans are however in place for another attempt and these caches seek to provide new interest in the area.
