Geocache Description:

The Fantastic F------- Falls

The cache, a small black-taped plastic camo-pot, is hidden in a shady spot about 3-4m above river level in a space underneath the largest boulder in the area perched on the bank - see spoiler photos. Please watch out for muggles when retrieving and replacing it and take care to replace it properly as found - not pushed too far under the rock - thanks!

These spectacular falls are apparently (and rather surprisingly) not well known or much visited by Nairobi residents or visitors despite being only 65km NE and less than an hour and a half away down the new Thika Super Highway and being one of Kenya's natural wonders. The Thika river thunders over an 8m drop in a series of falls about 120m across. Towards the end of the main rainy season (April-May), the volume of water flowing over the falls is at its greatest and the falls at their most stunning - but even when the river is much lower the falls are still truly impressive.

There is a nice shady trail along the northern bank of the river towards the cache area, passing by various boatmen who will surely offer to take you up river close to the falls and across to the island in the river from where it is possible to approach very close to the middle of the falls - well worth doing if you have the time.

You could easily spend a couple of hours here strolling around the rocks at the base of the Falls and enjoying the fresh air, breathtaking views and local flora. The foot of the Falls is characterized by large boulders and the powerful sound of rushing water as it cascades over the drop. A fine spray hangs in the air and keeps everything cool. There are lots of birds. Local guides may also entertain visitors by performing jumps from the top of the falls into the plunge pool below.

Note: The actual name of the falls is not given as it is the subject of the nearby old (2002) Virtual Cache GC7362 Water World

Enjoy your visit to this wonderful place!

See here for a video close-up of the Falls as seen from the island.

See here for a video of the Falls in rainy season with the river in flood (the rock in the middle seen at 1:08 is where the previous video was taken from)

See here for video of crazy Falls jumpers (video is a bit crazy too!)
