This cache has been placed at the scenic and historic little fishing port of Keiss. From the harbour there are magnificent views over Sinclairs Bay with its interesting wildlife including seals, porpoises, Orca, and both Great Northern and black throated divers, and up to 17species of seabirds. Across the bay lie Noss Head lighthouse, the ruins of Sinclair and Girnigoe castles and Ackergill Tower, a luxury hotel.
Nestled among the sand dunes is an oil fabrication yard, specialists in constructing subsea pipelines to connect oil platforms. Some of these are over 6km in length and weigh over 10,00 tonnes. The yard has launched over 70 such pipeline bundles in the last thirty years, an amazing engineering and logistical feat, the most specialized yard in the world for such work.
A display board near the cache gives an outline of local history, going back to beyond Neolithic times. Other museums in the area expand on these topics.
The cache container has been placed to remind me of the interesting Walls of York caches. Please replace the container carefully to avoid it being muggled. You will need a pen for the log.
