Geocache Description:

Chisholm Trail Marker and Hatcher Hospital / Chisholm Trail Museum

This is an addition to the Chisholm Trail Series started by 4America in Sedgwick County.  This is a series of markers, consisting of womehwere around 121 Kansas, 400 Oklahoma, and ?? Texas roadside markers.

The building is a reinforced, concrete structure built in 1916 as the Hatcher Hospital. Originally a two-story structure with basement, a third story and electric elevator were added in 1920. The nearly 80 year old elevator is one of the oldest elevators still in use in Kansas.

Hospital staff during the 1920s numbered six MDs, including Dr. A. R. Hatcher, one dental surgeon, and a consulting neurologist named Dr. Karl A. Menninger, M. D. With the passing of Dr. Albert R. Hatcher and his son, Dr. A. C. Hatcher, the hospital closed in 1961 and became the Chisholm Trail Museum in 1965.

Many older people still living in the Wellington area either worked at or were treated by doctors in this building. In fact, many Wellington residents were born here between 1916 and 1961. The original second floor nursery is preserved as part of the museum that many return to see.

From the Chisholm Trail Marker, project 97 feet at 270 degrees.  You are looking for a magnetic key holder with a log only.  Please remember to bring your own pen/pencil!
