Geocache Description:

St Martin, Ancaster

ST MARTIN, ANCASTER

St Martin, Ancaster is a Grade I listed building, achieving the status on 20 September 1966.

The church is dedicated to Martin of Tours, a Roman soldier who was converted to Christianity. It is likely that there was a Roman temple on this site, but by the later part of the Roman occupation the burials were Christian. (See information board by cemetery gate, and the Roman coffins)

The church is built of Ancaster stone. The chancel and nave date from 1125-1140. Parts of the nave and south aisle were added in the 15th century and there are some lovely examples of Victorian stained glass. The font is Norman style.

The tower with its spire contains five bells, which were rehung in 1923. The top of the spire was rebuilt within the last few years.

At the southern end of the church wall you can see the Deae Matres, the Mother Goddesses. This is a copy of a sculpture, found in Ancaster in 1831, which is now in the museum in Grantham.
