Circuit rider Henry W. Smith a.k.a. Preacher Smith is recognized as the person responsible for bringing christianity to the Black Hills. He was murdered 18 days after Wild Bill Hickok the summer of 1876. The Preacher Smith monument is located not far from where his body was found.
