Geocache Description:

Church Micro IE #54 – St. Mary’s on-the-Hill, Glengormley.

The church was constructed in 1897. It is visible from a long distance around as it was built quite prominently at the top of the hill.

It was also the furthest that the old Belfast town gas system was piped too before it was superceded by its more modern equivalent.

The church was constructed from stone obtained from a quarry near to the bottom of the Bernice Road between Mallusk and Roughfort.

The bell tower was never constructed as they ran out of money towards the end. For the centenary the tower as it was, was capped with a square shallow pitched roof. The public entrance used to be at the bottom of the tower before the new entrance was constructed.

There is a dearth of information available about the church online. If I ever learn more I shall add it later.
