1933年（昭和8年）9月28日に開店。
旧ほてい屋の建物を1935年（昭和10年）に買収し、その翌年各階を接続して本館と一体化しました。
本館とメンズ館本館の外装はアール・デコ様式で、東京都の歴史的建造物に選定されており、東京都の選定歴史的建造物の登録標章が本館一階、新宿三丁目交差点付近の外壁に設置されています。
日曜日には新宿通りは歩行者天国になります。
