Geocache Description:

This is a series of caches around the village of Perran-Ar-Worthal, placed in memory of my grandfather, E.E.W. Ryall (1910-1986) who published a short history of the village in 1957. We are in the process of getting it republished but in the meantime have included short extracts in this series. It is about 4.5km and should take about an hour and a half.

YOU WILL NEED TWEEZERS AND A PENCIL OR PEN FOR SOME OF THE CACHES.

School Hill

“As early as 1855 an attempt had been made to set up a school. Previous to this, private schools and Dame schools were set up in various parts of the parish... These were small schools run by well meaning people who saw the need for such long before the State dreamed of lending a hand. [There are also 20th century] recollections of children doing their lessons in a house in the village opposite the shop about 1876-77. As to the present building, a meeting was held in the Alms House in 1874 when it was decided that the Act of 1870 must be implemented. The site chosen being that of the old Alms House which had become derelict. The work was commenced and the School Board met 17th Dec 1876. The building was started in 1878 and opened 13th January 1879.”

This is a small 35mm film canister.
