Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of five caches placed in the grounds of Powis Castle and the deer park, as managed by the National Trust. The caches include traditional and multicache locations; and the names reflect animals that you may encounter. Placed with the kind permission of Dave Swanton, Garden Operations Manager, Powis Castle.

This is a simple multicache walking trail around the grounds of Powis Castle courtyard and gardens. Park in the main car park, you will require tickets to both the castle and garden to complete this 'cache (or National Trust membership) Access to the castle is also available on foot from Welshpool - check the access times at the gate in town. The CO makes no apologies for the length of this listing, you may need to print out all the details as it may not fully display on your GPS unit.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE MAY BE RESTRICTED ACCESS TO SOME AREAS & STATUES IN THE GARDEN THAT MAY MAKE THIS CACHE UNABLE TO BE COMPLETED. The CO makes no apologies for this state of affairs as it is likely to be a problem from November to Easter only. Undertake this cache at your own risk, and if not possible to be completed just enjoy the wonderful castle grounds. During summer, it is normally open from 10.00 - 18.00. From November to Easter, access to the garden is normally between 11.00 - 16.00. It is advisable to check the opening times here first before attending the castle.

This tour has been designed to be a fun stroll around the castle and gardens, gleaning information from various sites on the way. The tour itself includes garden paths, slight inclines and many stairs - it is not impossible with a stroller but will be difficult. Unfortunately wheelchair access is not available to all the site visits required by this multicache. Depending on walking speed and deduction time, this cache is likely to take 30-90 minutes. Please note that the stage numbers do not correspond to the question numbers. There are multiple questions at certain locations and additional questions en route between certain waypoints. DO NOT take routes directly between waypoints as in some cases there are vertical drops in the garden - use common sense and trust the directions first. There are opportunities for refreshments in Lady Henrietta's Restaurant in the castle courtyard, or Lady Violet's garden tea-room near the Formal Garden. It is recommended to use the Garden Map available from the ticket office to orient yourself on this walk. Be cautious using the waypoints for the locations in the wood as they may be out due to tree cover. It is certainly possible to undertake the Peacock's sister multicache Powis Castle - Pheasant at the same time, but you may get confused! There is also the stand alone traditional cache Powis Castle - Hedgehog in the bottom of the garden to find. If undertaking the three geocache opportunities within Powis Castle & Garden at the same time then the recommended order is: Pheasant (clues), Peacock (clues start), Hedgehog (cache), Pheasant (cache), Peacock (more clues and cache) - they can all essentially be combined as one long circular walk.
