According to Gardiner Chamber personnel, high above Gardiner the historic mining town of Jardine used this area known as Headgate years ago to control the water flow leading downhill to a double waterwheel. The energy developed here, nearly four hundred horsepower, was sufficient to light the mining town and to power both of its mills.
The pond has been referred to as “Stock Pond” because this is where they watered the horses and livestock.
