Pukenui State Forest having an area of 592 hectares, was logged in the 1920’s and has since regenerated vigorously containing most of the forest species found in Northland. Entrance and carpark is approx 4km from the Kamo traffic lights along Three Mile Bush Rd.Parking area is at the end of Amalin Drive with a DOC info board displaying the tracks, times and Forest history. From here follow the orange markers across farmland to the bush-line and turn right to begin.
The Short Loop track should take around 2 hours hike amongst large Totora’s, Kauri’s,ferns and Nikau Palms with a few stream crossings along the way.
Caches are camo berrocca tubes placed with easy clues in-case GPS reception is poor on the day.
Cache is hidden at the Taraire Ridge/Pukenui Forest Track junction before the stream crossing.
