Geocache Description:

Amanda Makes You Walk (AMYW) is a series of caches designed to get you walking out and about in Alice Springs.

This cache is located a little over 1.5km along the world famous Larapinta Trail. The Larapinta Trail is 223km long and consists of 12 stages, stretching from Alice Springs to Mount Sonder, the fourth highest mountain in central Australia. You can walk the trail as day, or even short walks, or if you're keen, walk the whole trail from beginning to end, which takes about 15 days (if you dawdle).

Section 1 of the Trail starts at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station and extends west for 23.9km to Simpsons Gap. It's a fairly easy day walk (takes me about 5-6 hours, but most people seem to take about 8-9hrs), which takes you into some spectacular country. To do this cache, you'll only be walking for approximately 1.5km out along Section 1 of the Larapinta Trail. Make sure you take the Larapinta Trail turn after you've visited the old cemetery (and picked up the Dead Centre #1 cache!), rather than the Trig Hill Walk.

The Overland Telegraph Line (OTL) crosses this part of the Larapinta Trail. The Australian Overland Telegraph Line was a 3200 km telegraph line that connected Darwin with Port Augusta in South Australia. Completed in 1872 the Overland Telegraph Line allowed fast communication between Australia and the rest of the world. The metal poles you can see along the trail are some of the original poles used by the OTL, left in-situ. These metal poles are called 'Oppenheimer' poles (galvanised iron from London), and they replaced the original cypress pine poles as they were eaten by termites (in most cases, this occurred in less than three years). The Alice Springs Telegraph Station, of course, was one of the repeater stations along the OTL. The poles were placed 80 m apart and repeater stations built every 250 km.

Make sure you take about 1 litre of water, wear a hat and wear either runners or comfortable walking shoes.

The cache is a mini decon container, with room for small swaps and a log.
