Geocache Description:

Crown and miter

This is the first in my Time Gentlemen Please series. The series will take you on a tour of Stockport's closed and disappeared public houses. Some recent some from the past. But don't worry you will pass plenty of open pubs along the way, but hurry they are disappearing fast. " Time gentlemen please "

Visit the Time Gentlemen Please web site for more info on the expanding series. http://tgpgeopage.weebly.com/

I have chosen this first location because the public house that once stood on the site belonged to my family for a good part of it's life.

History

Public house / Bank

The Crown and Mitre

Not at the bottom of Lancashire Hill but in the immediate vicinity of the bridge, At the Tiviot Dale end of Kings St east, Portwood and backing directly onto the river Goyt. 1889 William and Elizabeth Lowndes held the tenancy, And the pub stayed in my family until it close in 1953, Later the building being demolished in 1969. A tree still stands to this day with the initials of some family members, etched into the bark as they played at the back of the pub, the tree stands at the back of what is now the car park. .

Bank

Located as it was, near the bottom of Lancashire hill, It was a prime location to offer the service of a puffer horse for those needing large and heavy loads pulled up the hill. Travels would buy a three pence note from the Crown and Mitre and hand it to Mr O'Brien who owned the horse and would pull the load, then allowing the traveler to continue there much flatter journey to Manchester. Mr O'Brien would then cash to notes at the Bank/pub or in exchange for food and beer.

Also nearby just across the road stood another pub, but sadly to close for a cache of it's own, was the Kings Arms.Warren St / Kings St east ( now the entrance to a well known supermarket's car park ). The inn was situated in an area previously known as Andrew square. Before the other well known supermarket was built in the 1980's, This was an open square, Used mainly for parking with a bus shelter. It used to be the site of a warehouse belonging to William Andrew, who gave his name to the square. Beneath it's road is probably the biggest natural cavern in the Borough. It is thought to have been formed when the water tunnels were being constructed under Stockport and crossed a natural fault line, causing the roof to collapse and open up this underground cave.

The inn itself dates back to around 1830 and was also used as a police station, by the 'Peelers', but after Castle Mill was taken down in 1841, the courthouse on Warren Street was extended and a new police station was constructed on Vernon street. The inn closed in 1990 but the building is still going strong today, and is used by a taxi firm and as a cafe.

You are looking for a small magnetic keysafe box with log only so byop. Because of it's location it goes without saying a lot of stealth is required due to the high muggle count at peak times.

Happy hunting
