How could we have a Key's Kritters series without a Pink Flamingo?
When wild Flamingos are seen in Florida, it’s usually because they’ve flown here due to drought or lack of food in their normal habitat. Florida Bay and some of the mangroves in the back country make a great place for Flamingos to find food because of the high saline content of the water which supports shrimp, insects and blue-green algae, which accounts for the Flamingos pink coloring. Unfortunately, you will no longer find any Pink Flamingos in the Key's, so you'll have to settle on finding "Pinky" instead. The good news is that the beautiful and pink-colored Roseate Spoonbills can still be seen here in the Keys, they look very similar to the Flamingo except their bill is in the shape of a spoon, hence their name! It's always makes our day when we see a flock feeding or flying-by overhead, we hope they also grace you with their presence while you're on holiday in the Keys as well! Say hi to Pinky for us, she's a cutie pie! Congrats to FLMariner on the FTF!!!
