The George IV
This public house was opened in 1826 with a party, by the Landlord Benjamin Smith and sons, Thomas and Henry. Smith was a captain in the Stockport Hussars so it was not surprising that the inn was named as a celebration of King and Country. It was the headquarters of the 'Heroes of Waterloo' society and many an old soldier has fought the battle over and over again within it's walls. In 1828, a grand dinner was given to commemorate Waterloo, but two years later King George died and the inn became know as the Old King. In the 1870's the landlords, First George Ball and later his son, became famous for their own brewhouse, Which was sold to Hardy Crow Brewery, Hulme in 1912. ( Also no longer in business ) But you will see the name on many pubs around Manchester built into the brickwork usually at the top. In 1979 the building was remodelled and the original windows, Which portrayed the King, Were made into mirrors and hung inside. The pub closed it's doors 2011 and then demolished a year later, there know stands a restaurant on the land, and so goes another great pub.
