Orasul este impartit in doua de Canalul Dunare-Marea Neagra, proiect inceput de Stalin in 1948 cand a trasat pe harta linia canalului. Istoria ne spune ca acest proiect a fost inceput in scopul exterminarii clasei politice. Sub conducerea lui Dej, canalul a devenit un lagar de munca. Din 1948 pana in 1958 aici au murit 100.000 de oameni.
Ceausescu a reinceput lucrarile la canal pentru a scurta drumul catre Europa de Vest, pentru transportul petrolului.
Magistrala Albastra, a fost inaugurata la 26 Mai 1984.Are o lungime de 64 de kilometri si este la treilea canal ca marime din lume dupa Suez si Panama.

Nicolae Ceausesc restared the works on the canal to make a shortcut to Europe for the oil transport.
The Blue Line, as it was named, was inaugurated at 26th May 1984. The canal is 64 kilometers long and is the third longesc canal in the world after Suez and Panama.
