Geocache Description:

An easy one at an interesting old ruin in Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park. Did all the local hermits come here for a drink on Friday nights after a hard week hermitting?

I'm yet to find out the history of Old Coach Road - unless it was here before the gold rushes, it's hard to see why coaches would be driven along here, halfway between the gold towns of Beechworth and Chiltern. This ruin is even more of a mystery - one theory is it was a pub - the evidence is the 3 large holes nearby which may have been cellars.. It was obviously a solid building with very thick walls. Another, maybe more plausible but less romantic, theory is that it was a tanner's hut, and the pits were for soaking wattle bark to get the tannin for treating the hides. There are also signs (ie fireplaces) of three smaller huts in the area around the main ruin, probably where the workers lived. Now its something quite impressive to come upon in a quiet corner of the National Park. Please don't interfere with the stones of the ruins, this is a historic site. And no dogs, as this is National Park The cache is a good-sized polypipe container with logbook, pencil and......not much else, sorry!
