Geocache Description:

Saturday night fever

Demir Hisar (which means "Iron fortress" in Turkish) is a municipality in southwestern part of Republic of Macedonia. Demir Hisar is situated along the main road between Bitola and Kicevo. This region is relatively less visited than the others, but yet, ones you discover its preserved secrets and beauties, you will never forget it…

The Demir Hisar municipality is a hilly and mountainous area located in the southwestern part of Macedonia, around the upper basin of the Crna Reka (Black River). The area of the municipality spreads between the mountains of Bushava on east, Bigla, Plakenska and Ilinska on the south-west and Drevenik on south-east. The seat of the Demir Hisar municipality is Demir Hisar city.

Somewhere in the mountains

The mountains are covered with oak and beach forests and are rich in natural wildlife – bear, wolf, wild boar, wild cat, red deer, hare, badger, marten, squirrel, fox, weasel,… If you are lucky (and quite) maybe you will get the opportunity to meet and observe some of them. Due its geographical position, lack of heavy industry and pollution, this region represents a clean, healthy oasis for all visitors.

Through this area flows Crna Reka (Black River), the largest and longest (207 km) right tributary of Vardar River. It emerges near the village Zheleznec and flows into Vardar next to the archeological site Stobi (near Negotino city).

Crna Reka (Black River) springs

Demir Hisar municipality boasts important historic and religious monuments with spiritual, educational, literary and artistic activities (monasteries: "John the Baptist" in the village Slepche, "St. Athanasius of Alexandria" in Zhurche, "St. Peter" in .Smilevo and "St. Nicholas Toplicki" in Toplice. On the Ilinska mountain you can visit the St. Iliya monastery (1525 m a.s.l.)

There are many old crafts that still exist in the villages in the municipality of Demir Hisar. They are very interesting for tourists. So you can see the rolling water mills in the villages Virovo and Sloeshtica (used for woolen blankets production and laundry), traditional weaving of woolen blankets, blacksmith craft, traditional production of charcoal, making lime, handmade woolen carpets with folk motifs, handmade knitted and wooden products, woodcarving (mostly in monasteries), …

About this cache:: This cache will bring you to the village Zheleznec (“Iron village”). In this village you can observe the traditional old way of building houses. Nearby there are the springs of the Black River (Crna Reka). However, the main reason for bringing you to this place is an old house, where was the village discotheque! Cool, isn’t it?

Saturday night fever? Here!

How to get there: Direction Skopje-Kicevo-Ohrid: At village Drugovo turn left, toward Bitola. Direction Skopje-Prilep-Bitola: do not enter Bitola city, but at the crossroad turn right toward Demir Hisar city. At R1 park your car. Be very careful: follow carefully the GPS, when approaching the place, because the "parking place" is only an expansion of the road so do not miss it!

The cache is a small 100 ml glass jar with a blue lid.

Please, be very careful when getting out, logging and putting back the cache, in order to protect it of Muggles! In case of lost of the cache the owner can visit the location and restore it only 2-3 times per year! Thanks.
