Geocache Description:

Another great cache along the Crown Zellerbach Trail.

The cache is not at the posted coordinates. You will need these clues to find the box:

  1. The box is hidden approximately one and three quarter miles west of the intersection of Rain Garden Lane and the Crown Zellerbach Trail. You will know you have arrived in the general area when you spy a stand of several (7+) trees with white bark on the south (left) side of the trail (see photo). You will also be very near Mile Post 12.
  2. From Mile Post 12 walk approximately 12 paces (24 steps) to the east.
  3. Leave the trail to the south (right) and venture 12 paces (24 steps) through the trees with white bark. Find a stand of three great evergreens. Between these three trees is an old rotting log.
  4. The box is beside the log under a pile of sticks.

The name of this cache, hayas chak-chak, is the Chinook word for thunderbird, not to be confused with the eagle (chak-chak). Since I live in Scappoose (the Chinook word for gravelly plain), I thought it would be fun to name my caches in Chinook. This is my 25th hide, celebrating my 250th find. The cache is hidden about 1.7 miles from the parking coordinates

The Crown Zellerbach trail was once a logging road and before that, a logging railroad. Today it is a linear county park. It is a rails-to-trails project that is progressing as funding permits. Mile posts have recently appeared!

This is my 15th letterbox cache, but my first hand-carved stamp. I became interested in letter boxing just last year (2012), and there are so few in this area that I decided right away that I wanted to start hiding some of my own. Remember: letterboxes include stamps, which are not trade items. I placed the stamp in a labeled bag. I placed the trade items in another labeled bag, so you shouldn't get them mixed up.
