The One In The Hights
The National Geodetic Network is the sum of all Geodetic Pillars and its geometrical relationships, spread among the country in dominant positions.
The National Geodesic Network is the set of all geodetic pillars and their geometric relationships, distributed throughout the country, placed in dominant positions to ensure intervisibility, properly coordinated. Are materialized through various geometric shapes, like pyramids or truncated cones over cillinders or coincide with existing structures.
A GP is a sign that indicates an exact mapping position and form a network of triangles with other GP that are in isolated and high sites with line of sight to other GP.
The Portuguese Geodetic Network consists of GP which are divided into three orders of importance:
The existing number of pillars in the whole country (Continental Portugal and the Autonomous Regions) is currently about nine thousand, divided by:
-
Continent: 1st Order (about 120), 2nd Order (about 900) and 3rd order (with a density of approximately 1 pillar per 10 km ²).
-
Azores Islands: about de 500.
-
Madeira Islands: about de 150.
The NGN is the basic infrastructure on which rests all cartography of the country, and serving all those (companies, local authorities and other public and private), by virtue of their activities, need to geographically reference their projects.
The geodesic center of Portugal, is located in the Sierra Melriça, Vila de Rei, district of Castelo Branco.
The importance of the default GP, is that it was from this point that began the marking of the remaining thousands of GP of Portugal.
The Cache
This Geodetic Pillar is located at an incredible 1310m high, in the 11th highest mountain in continental Portugal and the 2nd of Bragança.
Unless you are a geocacher with above average hight, it is recommended 2 persons to make the aproach.
Please be very careful both going to get it and returning, is not the intention to turn this adventure into any kind of injuries.
NOTE: This cache has only a logbook. Please take something to write.
Good geo-hunt!
