Geocache Description:

This cache is just some fun facts about our small town.  Most of them can be found in the book Trailing Smokes in the Public Library.  The cache is hid in the back of the town park near the pavilion.  If the main concrete road is closed take the gravel road around the baseball fields, and park at the pavilion or stage.

The name Ider is likely derived from Ida for either the former postaster Ida Stallings or Ida Deavonport who directed the government officials to this area to inspect the location for the post office.

The first post office in Ider was established in November 7, 1877 on the back porch of Archibold and Nettie Ashberry’s log cabin.

In 1965 Archeologist from the University of Alabama excavated Native American shelters along Boydston Creek Bluff (Thunder Canyon).  The site included pictographs, over 125 projectile points, and one apparent burial.  The evidence at the shelter appears to indicate the entire history of its occupation spanned at least 9000 years.

20,000 Union Soldiers marched through Ider on their way to the Battle of Chickamauga.

The first school in Ider was Marona School, and was established around 1891.  Marona School’s name was eventually changed to Ider School.

In 1959 a 300 Ib. meteorite was found in Ider.  The Smithsonian still has some of the pieces of this meteorite in their collection.

Mule Day is the towns annual festival, and is held on Labor Day.  Mule Day activities include horse and mule pulls, an antique tractor and car show, food, arts and crafts, gospel singing, and children's games

There are many more facts about Ider in Trailing Smokes.

And if you are visiting,  Welcome to Ider!!!
