Geocache Description:

A Team Barn Owls Cache. The majority of my caches have a link to my own personal history. This one falls into that category, too.

I was born in La Casita Hospital, on the far side of the park, and across the street, where apartments now exist. In 1964 the name was changed to Valley Memorial Hospital. (As a side-note, President Eisenhower was treated at that hospital in the winter of 1964.) Much of my childhood was spent on one part of Miles Ave: The hospital where I had an emergency appendectomy at the age of three, the Aladdin Theater where I watched double feature movies and performed dance recitals, the J.C. Penny's store where I loved shopping in the second story loft, and the Indio Florist shop that supplied the flowers for my wedding (and is still going strong today), and the vet who gave our pet raccoon his rabies shots.

Many of the people who have served on the board of the Coachella Valley Historical Museum knew me when I “was just a twinkle in my mother's eye”. Pat Laflin, who wrote the historical book you can purchase in the gift shop, was a huge part of my life. She was my first grade teacher, and then my Spanish teacher in junior high. I went through school with her daughter from kindergarten through high school, and spent many a sleepover night in her home. Laflin Date Gardens, now Oasis Date Gardens, were loyal customers of our family farmer's supply business for decades.

Most of the names found on plaques and cards within this museum are either people I know, or names I heard repeatedly during my childhood. The museum continues to grow, and each time I come here I find another nostalgic reminder of my childhood and my family. So, I am pleased and proud to share it with you.

Standing at the gate, you can see the one-room school house, bell tower, date grove, and courtyard that are just a small part of the museum. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, and Sunday 1:00 – 4:00 pm, during the winter. It is closed June through September, and major holidays. However, the cache is accessible from outside the locked gate.

This cache is placed with the permission of the museum board, with the caveat that it be removed if it causes any problems. I have vouched for the respectful behavior of all geocachers, so please follow all accepted geocaching guidelines. I suggest that any night cachers have a printout or saved phone app to show interested policemen that you have the museum's permission to be here.

Please be careful when removing and replacing the cache. If you do happen to drop it, please let me know asap so I can rush to save it from inquiring muggles. PLEASE replace it EXACTLY where you found it. You may want to bring the appropriate TOT for this type of cache.

The coords bounce pretty good here, so take second and third readings if you are having trouble. We did a triangulation based on several different readings. Log only. BYOP

Okay, all you brave desert rats, come find it before You-Know-Who is back in town!
