Geocache Description:

Congrats to DukeRoom for being the FTF!

This cache is to commemorate Barton College's dramatic national basketball championship victory in 2007. Please sign the log and be sure to note your graduation year and major if you are an ACC or BC alumnus. Be mindful of muggles in parked cars while retrieving the cache, and replace as found. For safety, please use the nearby parking lot to access the cache; do not park on the shoulder of the road.

On March 24, 2007, the Barton College Bulldogs won the NCAA Men's Division II Basketball National Championship. With a 31-5 record, the Bulldogs toppled the previously undefeated defending champions, the Winona State Warriors. With 45 seconds on the clock and the Warriors leading 74-67, Barton's Anthony Atkinson scored 10 points in 39 seconds. His winning layup at the buzzer clinched the 77-75 victory. Wilsonians, bearing banners and waving pennants, lined the street welcoming the victorious Bulldogs home. A few months later at ESPN's 2007 ESPY Awards, Barton's win was nominated in the category of "Best Finish" but was edged out by the Dodgers' win over the Padres. Today, Anthony Atkinson plays for the Harlem Globetrotters. Although the championship was several years ago, loyal Bulldog fans still enjoy reliving those fabulous 45 seconds through the videos on the Internet.

GO BULLDOGS!

(Ideally, the cache would have been placed on campus at Wilson Gymnasium; however, this location next to the interstate seemed to be a great place to snag traveling cachers and share the Bulldogs' story with them.)
