During the early years, the area was a natural as a hatchery, since it was blessed with good spring water that was ideal for the purpose. The original hatch house was replaced in 1914 at a cost of $4,000 and still stands. Natural springs still supply the Canyon Ponds. However the water volumes eventually became insufficient for hatchery purposes.
