Daisy's North Chagrin Night Cache Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Daisy Explorers: The metroparks does not allow fire tacks in the trees. Several years ago I was able to pick up special fire tacks at a Mega Event, glue them together to make the fire tacks to hang from trees. I cannot find these specific fire tacks online. Too many are missing now... It was a good run. Maybe when we do find them, we can get another night cache out here.

How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

Cleveland Metroparks' North Chagrin Reservation closes at 11:00 PM. Completing the cache before the park closing is a requirement for logging this cache. The cache is approx. a 1.5 mile hike and should take less than an hour to complete (45 - 60 minutes). Please plan accordingly.  Failure to adhere to the park closing deadline may result in a ranger citation, your log being deleted, and ultimately this cache being archived.

This is a Night Cache. YOU WILL NEED A STRONG FLASHLIGHT (headlamp illumination alone will not be sufficient). The cache is a clear plastic 6"X 6" X 4" clear tupperware lock & lock. The hide is straight forward and not 'clever' or 'devious' in any way (as a Daisy Explorers' cache we thought this disclaimer necessary). It is NOT our intention to get you lost in the woods at night.

The terrain is rated 3.5 because you will be walking at night on a park trail along a very steep ravine (stay on the path!). There are also ruts, roots, uneven terrain, steps, slippery conditions, sometimes muddy paths and horse droppings. This park is also home to a diverse variety of wild animals.

Park at Buttermilk Falls Scenic Overlook (N 41° 33.915 W 081° 26.080). Carefully cross the street and proceed to the trail head (N 41° 33.912' W 081° 26.070).

*****IMPORTANT: TO FIND THE CORRECT TRAILHEAD FOLLOW YOUR GPS. You should immediately see fire tacks at the beginning of the trail and the start of the night cache.*****

TO FIND THE CACHE:
Cleveland Metroparks forbids the use of fire tacks nailed to trees so we developed an alternate method. We made double sided reflectors and suspended them by small wires.

You are still looking for fire tacks (small dime size reflectors) hidden along the trail on trees or other structures that will reflect once you shine your flashlight on them and confirm you are going the correct way. Follow the fire tacks. If you are on a trail that does not branch with no choices to make, the fire tacks will be fewer and farther between.

If you come to a trail "T", "Y" or an intersection, then look for the fire tacks along the proper trail you are to take (Note: different color fire tacks, or double/triple tacks are not used to distinguish right or left).

The cache will be nearby a cluster of fire tacks and within ten feet of the trail.
Once you find the cache, the SHORTEST PATH back to the trail head, and your car, will be to maintain the direction you had been walking and continue on the path, following the fire tacks until you see an 'exit' sign. The longer route would be going back the way you came.

This cache meets the guidelines for geocaching set forth by the Cleveland Metroparks:
1. The cache is on and reached via designated Cleveland Metroparks trails.
2. The cache is clearly labeled: Geocaching, GC#, Date, CO and contact information.
3. The cache is a 6"X6"X4" clear lock & lock tupperware container with log book.

Please strictly adhere to the park's geocaching rules:
1. Be out of the park by 11:00 PM.
2. When exchanging SWAG items: Small toys, coins or coupons are examples of things that are appropriate to leave.
3. Absolutely NO tobacco, alcohol, drugs, firearms, dangerous items, adult items, and FOOD is to be left in a cache.
4. Please do not move a travel bug unless you are registered with the website and are familiar with how to log the move.

NOTE: For cachers bringing dogs, you are expected and required to pick-up after your pet. Please bring your own 'poop scoop baggies'. There is a trash can near the scenic Butter Milk Falls Overlook, on the paved path north-west and adjacent to the parking coordinates.

CONGRATULATIONS to GREEN EYED DRAGONFLY and KODIAKWOODSMAN on FTF!!!
