Now we come to carbon. Some might call this one of the most important elements on earth. Carbon is so fundamental to life that it has its own branch of chemistry--organic chemistry.

Carbon has an atomic number of 6 and mass of 12.01 amu. It is tetravalent, meaning that each carbon atom can form up to 4 bonds (single, double, or triple bonds). Various carbon structures can form including rings and lattices.
