Loddon River Walk 4 - Karlie McDonald Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Team Megradel: This cache has been the victim of multiple flood events and has had to be replaced each time, and each time its hiding location has deteriorated more and more. It is time to find a new home nearby that is more flood resistant.

Geocache Description:

The Loddon River walk is a series of caches that take you along the local walking track along the Loddon river and in parts on the levee bank that protected the town of Kerang during the floods of 2011.

Karlie McDonald was a local high school teacher.  In 1927 she was with a group of students near this location doing swimming lessons.  This was before the old pool was built further south along the river.  Whilst she was attempting to rescue several girls in trouble Karlie herself got into difficulty and drowned.  The clock tower in the centre of town was built as a memorial to her and her heroic efforts.   If you read the information board near this point you will see a picture of how the river was back in those days.  There was a diving board here and change rooms – hard to imagine now.
