My family backpacked the Trans Catalina Trail from Two Harbors to Avalon over three days. It was an incredible adventure! The scenery ranged from scrub, to pines, to beach and the topology was rarely flat! We saw a number of different birds, deer, foxes, and many buffaloes. The segment between the Black Jack camp and the camp at Hermit Gulch was my favorite because of the dramatic landscape and the peaceful setting. You are really in the heart of Catalina Island during this stretch. We came down through a fairly steep section and rested here, a flat section with really nice views of the various mountains and valleys. We placed a cache here knowing that it won't get many visitors, but now that I know what it is like along here, I will be jealous of those who do come! The cache is a camo'd pill bottle. Note that the terrain rating is for getting to the cache, the cache itself is in 1.5 star terrain.
